Acupuncture for Arthritis: Supporting Joint Pain, Mobility, and Everyday Comfort
Movassaghi • September 17, 2026

Joint pain can change the way you move through your day. Getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, opening a jar, or taking a walk may become uncomfortable. Over time, you may start avoiding activities you once enjoyed.

If you are living with arthritis, you may be wondering whether acupuncture could help.

At Lotus Acupuncture & Wellness in Merrimack, New Hampshire, we offer personalized acupuncture as a complementary option for managing pain. Our goal is to help you move more comfortably and participate in daily life—not simply focus on a number on a pain scale.

Understanding Arthritis and Joint Pain

Arthritis is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the joints. The type of arthritis you have matters because different conditions require different treatment approaches.

Osteoarthritis involves changes throughout the joint, including cartilage, bone, and surrounding structures. It commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine and may cause pain, stiffness, or difficulty moving. It is more complex than simply “wear and tear.” American College of Rheumatology

Inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis, is different. These conditions require medical treatment to control the disease and help prevent joint damage. Acupuncture should not replace prescribed medication or care from your rheumatologist.

Having a clear diagnosis helps us understand where acupuncture may fit within your overall care.

Can Acupuncture Help Arthritis Pain?

Research suggests that acupuncture may help some people manage osteoarthritis pain, with the most extensive evidence involving knee osteoarthritis. Evidence for other joints is less consistent.

The American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation conditionally recommend acupuncture for knee, hip, and hand osteoarthritis. A conditional recommendation means it may be appropriate for some patients, depending on their preferences, symptoms, and treatment options—not that it works for everyone. NCCIH: Acupuncture Effectiveness and Safety

Acupuncture does not cure arthritis, rebuild damaged cartilage, or reliably stop disease progression. Its potential role is symptom management: helping reduce pain so that movement and everyday activities may feel more manageable.

For someone with knee arthritis, that could mean working toward a more comfortable walk. For another patient, it may mean standing longer to prepare a meal or feeling less restricted during daily errands.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture involves placing very fine, sterile needles at selected points on the body.

From a biomedical perspective, its effects are not fully understood. Research suggests that acupuncture may influence nervous-system activity and how the body processes pain. Local tissue effects and the broader treatment experience may also contribute. NCCIH

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, pain is often understood through patterns involving the movement of Qi and Blood. Traditional concepts such as cold, dampness, stagnation, or deficiency may guide treatment selection.

These are traditional diagnostic frameworks, not the same as biomedical diagnoses. At Lotus, we consider both your

medical history and your individualized TCM assessment when planning care.

Why Treatment Is Personalized

Two people with the same arthritis diagnosis may experience very different symptoms.

One person may have aching knees that feel worse after standing. Another may have hand discomfort that limits gripping. Someone else may notice that persistent pain interferes with sleep or leaves surrounding muscles feeling tense.

During your consultation, we discuss:

  • Which joints are affected and how long symptoms have been present
  • What makes your pain better or worse
  • How symptoms affect walking, work, sleep, and daily activities
  • Previous treatments, imaging, and medical diagnoses
  • Current medications and relevant health conditions
  • Your priorities and what meaningful improvement would look like
  • This helps us establish practical goals and select an appropriate treatment approach

What to Expect During Treatment at Lotus

Your first visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms and health history, followed by an assessment and a personalized plan.

Acupuncture points may be selected near the affected area and elsewhere on the body. Treatment does not necessarily involve placing needles directly into the painful joint.

When appropriate, we may discuss additional techniques such as electroacupuncture, which uses a gentle electrical current between selected needles. Not every technique is suitable for every patient.

Tell your practitioner if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant, have an implanted electrical device, or take medication that affects your immune system. This information helps us plan treatment safely. Minor soreness, bruising, or bleeding can occur; more serious complications are uncommon when acupuncture is properly performed. NCCIH

Living with arthritis does not mean your treatment goals have to be limited to “putting up with it.”

At Lotus Acupuncture & Wellness, we take time to understand how pain affects your life and whether acupuncture may be a useful addition to your care. We work toward practical improvements while respecting the medical treatment your condition requires.
